Spravato Treatment for Depression That Hasn't Responded

What is Spravato?

Spravato is an FDA-approved nasal spray used to treat severe depression that hasn’t improved with other drugs. It is the only FDA-approved form of ketamine for mental health care. Spravato works by blocking certain brain receptors, which can ease symptoms of depression quickly.

Spravato is for adults with treatment-resistant depression. It is also approved for adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) who have serious thoughts of suicide. This drug can work within hours or days, not weeks like most antidepressants.

At Carencia, we offer Spravato treatment under close medical watch. Our providers are REMS-certified to give this drug safely. Each session takes place at our Arlington clinic, where you stay for at least two hours after your dose.

Who Qualifies for
Spravato ?

Spravato is for adults who have tried at least two other depression medicines without enough relief. This is called treatment-resistant depression. It may also help adults with major depression who have thoughts of self-harm. You must take Spravato along with an oral antidepressant for it to work best.

What to Expect

Starting Spravato is simple. Here’s how it works:

First, you’ll meet with our team for a consultation. We’ll review your history and discuss whether Spravato is right for you. This visit helps us build a care plan just for you.

During treatment sessions, you’ll use the nasal spray yourself while we watch over you. The process is quick and easy. After each dose, you’ll stay in our office for about two hours so we can monitor how you feel.

Sessions happen twice a week for the first month. After that, visits drop to once a week or every two weeks based on your progress. You’ll keep taking your oral antidepressant during this time.

We stay with you every step of the way. Regular follow-ups let us track your progress and adjust your care as needed.

Is Spravato safe? +

Spravato is FDA-approved and given under medical supervision in our REMS-certified clinic. Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, and feeling disconnected. Our team monitors you closely during each visit to ensure your safety.

How soon will I feel better? +

Some patients notice improvement within days to weeks. Results vary from person to person. Your provider will track your progress and adjust your care plan as needed.

What if I can’t afford treatment? +

Janssen, the maker of Spravato, offers a savings program for eligible patients. We also have self-pay options. Our team can help you explore ways to make treatment fit your budget.

Does insurance cover Spravato? +

Many insurance plans cover Spravato treatment. We accept BlueCross BlueShield PPO, Cigna PPO, Aetna PPO, and United Healthcare PPO. Our team will verify your benefits before you start.

Can I drive myself to appointments? +

No. Spravato can cause drowsiness and dizziness. You'll need someone to drive you home after each session. Do not drive or use heavy machines until the next day.

How often will I need treatment? +

Most patients come twice a week for the first month. After that, visits drop to once a week or every two weeks based on how you respond.

How long does a Spravato session take? +

Plan for about two and a half hours per visit. The nasal spray takes just a few minutes to use. You'll then stay in our office for two hours so we can monitor you before you leave.

Who can get Spravato treatment? +

Adults with treatment-resistant depression who have tried at least two other antidepressants without relief may qualify. It's also approved for adults with major depression and thoughts of self-harm. You must take it along with an oral antidepressant.

How is Spravato different from ketamine? +

Spravato is FDA-approved and covered by most insurance plans. It uses esketamine, a specific form of ketamine, and must be given in a certified clinic like ours. Traditional ketamine infusions are not FDA-approved for depression and often cost more out of pocket.
