Ketamine / Esketmine

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine/Esketamine originated as an anesthetic and is now used as a prescription spray under the name Esketamine. At Carencia, patients inhale the Esketamine spray in-office and are monitored for 2 hours while they take a brief nap.

Ketamine/Esketamine treatment has been effective at helping patients reach stable remission for depression symptoms and suicidal ideation for 16 weeks following treatment.

Ketamine/Esketamine is broadly considered safe, but for those who have a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, or substance abuse as well as teenagers, those pregnant or breastfeeding, or older adults with dementia, Ketamine/Esketamine should be avoided or used with outsized caution.

What does Ketamine treatment look like in practice?

Ketamine/Esketamine is a two-hour treatment at Carencia, administered as a nasal spray. Its impact is often felt immediately and within 40 minutes, patients typically feel a marked difference in their depression symptoms.

The treatment is often effective for up to 16 weeks, so we will typically create a treatment routine with frequent evaluations for you.

Why does Carencia offer Ketamine services?

Simply put, Ketamine/Esketamine is not a first-choice treatment for depression at Carencia. However, there are situations where Ketamine/Esketamine becomes the treatment mode with the greatest utility to individual patients.

In other words, we cautiously consider it when other treatments come up short. Specifically, we use it for what is called treatment-resistant depression or TRF, which is a severe depression that has held up against other therapies.

What if I have been told in the past by other providers that I have a certain disorder, that I don’t necessarily agree with? Does that stay on my permanent record? +

At Carencia we take into consideration our patients past, while presently conducting our own assessment of your symptoms. Think of this as “getting a second opinion” or considering other options. We are confident in our ability to assess and recommend the most up to date treatment options for your current presentation of symptoms, while taking into account your medical history.

How effective is cognitive behavioral therapy in treating mood disorders? +

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been found to be effective in treating mood disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), CBT has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of depression and improving overall mood.

Can therapy and medication be used together to treat addiction? +

Carencia utilizes therapy and medication together to treat addiction. Medications, such as Vivitrol, can help reduce cravings and manage withdrawal symptoms, while therapy can address the underlying psychological and emotional issues that contribute to addiction. Our team of healthcare providers will work with you to determine the best approach for your individual needs, including a combination of therapy and medication if deemed appropriate.
